Dutch Copperplate Script – Handwritten Poem with Flourished Capitals

A handwritten Dutch verse in flowing copperplate script, with big swash capitals and looping flourishes on nearly every line. The heading dedicates the poem to a portrait of the painter Gerrit Zeegelaar and is signed by Jan Bourse, and the eight lines below end in a long underline stroke. Varied pen pressure gives the calligraphy a lively, uneven rhythm that reads like real handwriting rather than a font. It comes cut out on a transparent background, so the lettering layers cleanly over paper textures in an ephemera collage.
